I. About

The CoolWav Voice Pack is an excellent addition to any Palm-powered handheld. Included in the full version package are 35 high-quality alarm sounds recorded in the human voice. These are not computer voices, so you can experience the rich quality of the alarms and actually understand what they are saying. The files are grouped into four (4) categories, each containing 35 alarms. Each category contains the same set of alarms, but with a twist: you can choose from the standard voice alarm, with or without an echo (this is a cool effect added), and with or without a horn alarm sound added to the beginning of the file - to make sure the alarm has your attention!

In addition, these are no standard, generic alarms. Sure, we included some cool standard alarms for those who still love them, but many of these alarms are specifically for certain applications, like Date Book/Calendar, To Do/Tasks, Note Pad, Agendus, and DiddleBug. Check out the list below for a peek at what you get.

With this great package, your Palm OS handheld never sounded so cool! It will make you the talk of your office or school, or just among your close friends!

II. Requirements

To begin, this software REQUIRES either wavAlarms or LightWav installed on the handheld.
This software is manufactured by ToySoft, and can be downloaded at the same site where you downloaded CoolWav Voice Pack Volume 1. There is a trial for the software, and it is well worth the price, as you can make any wav or MP3 file your own custom alarm sound.

  • PalmOS 5.0 and higher with Sound Manager
  • SonyClie PalmOS 5.2.1 with Sound Manager
  • 60K of free memory.
  • External card such as SD/MMC, Compact Flash or Memory Stick is required
  • Uncompressed wave files
  • Optional: PocketTunes(tm) 2.1 or higher to play mp3 and ogg files

    III. Installation

    Depending on whether you have wavAlarms or LightWav installed on your handheld, the installation will be different. In addition, the setup for LightWav is different depending on whether or not you want to use the raw wav files, or the LightWav files, for your alarms. Please click here for information specific to setting up LightWav, or read on, as it comes at the end of this installation section.

    NOTE: If you have wavAlarms, this software has been replaced with LightWav. Contact ToySoft and get yourself the new LightWav. This upgrade is much easier to use, and contains many updates.

    First, you will need to know a bit about the directory structure of the package you have downloaded. When you unzipped the file you downloaded, it should have created a folder with several subfolders inside.

    The four main folders are:

    1. Echo Voice No Alarm
      These files are the voice alarms with an echo added.
    2. Echo Voice with Alarm
      These files are the voice alarms with an echo added, and a horn alarm added to the beginning.
    3. Voice No Alarm
      These files are the voice alarms with no echo and no horn alarm at the beginning.
    4. Voice with Alarm
      These files are the voice alarms with no echo but with the horn alarm at the beginning.

    Inside each of these folders are two more subfolders (Compressed and LightWav). These folders contain the alarms themselves. The alarms for LightWav are in the "LightWav" folder, and those for wavAlarm are in the "Uncompressed" folder.

    It is important to note that both the LightWav and Uncompressed files in each of these folders can be used with LightWav, while only those in the Uncompressed folder can be used with wavAlarms.

    Installation for Use with LightWav:

    If you are using LightWav, you have two options to choose from:

    1. Sound files on the handheld (recommended).
    2. Sound files on the memory card.

    The first option, in our opinion, if the better of the two, as you can change cards and not have to worry about your alarms not playing.

    Installing sound files to the handheld:

    1. Choose the files you want to install from inside the folders included. They will have the file extension .pdb, and be of the Palm Database type.
    2. In Windows, double-click the files, one by one, and they will be send to the Palm Quick Install tool.
    3. HotSync your device to install the files to Palm memory (RAM).
    4. Once you have installed the files, you will see them in LightWav the next time you launch the application on the handheld.

    Important: If you are not using the Windows operating system, please follow the instructions that came with the Palm Desktop software to install your files on the handheld.

    Installing sound files to the card:

    1. Choose the files you want to install from inside the folders included. They will have the file extension .wav, and be of the WAV type. These files, as you may notice, can also be played on your computer.
    2. In Windows, select the file (or files) you want to install on the memory card.
    3. Right-click the file(s).
    4. When the pop-up menu appears, you will see "Send To". Click this menu option.
    5. Another pop-up will appear, giving you options of where to send the file(s). Click the option called "Palm Quick Install". This will send the files to the Palm Quick Install tool to be installed to the memory card on the next HotSync.
    6. HotSync your device to install the files to the memory card.
    7. Once you have installed the files, you will see them in LightWav the next time you launch the application on the handheld.

    Alternatively, in Windows, you can open the Palm Quick Install tool and drag the selected file(s) to the lower portion of the window titled "Expansion Card".

    Important: If you are not using the Windows operating system, please follow the instructions that came with the Palm Desktop software to install your files on the memory card.

    Installation for Use with wavAlarms:

    This installation is identical to "Installing sound files to the card" above. Here are the steps again.

    1. Choose the files you want to install from inside the folders included. They will have the file extension .wav, and be of the WAV type. These files, as you may notice, can also be played on your computer.
    2. In Windows, select the file (or files) you want to install on the memory card.
    3. Right-click the file(s).
    4. When the pop-up menu appears, you will see "Send To". Click this menu option.
    5. Another pop-up will appear, giving you options of where to send the file(s). Click the option called "Palm Quick Install". This will send the files to the Palm Quick Install tool to be installed to the memory card on the next HotSync.
    6. HotSync your device to install the files to the memory card.
    7. Once you have installed the files, you will see them in wavAlarms the next time you launch the application on the handheld.

    Setting Up LightWav:

    Setting up LightWav to work with the two types of files is easy, and, in fact, those files ending in .pdb (Palm Database Files) are designed specifically for LightWav. The following instructions are not meant to replace the documentation that comes with LightWav, rather, they are meant to get you started quickly. Nothing replaces reading the documentation that comes with your software. Please refer all questions regarding problems with LightWav to the LightWav manufacturer.

    If you are going to use the WAV sound files, installed on the memory card, and not the PDB files, you must go into the LightWav preferences and either check or uncheck "Always use PocketTunes". The files can be used/played if you are using Pocket Tunes with LightWav to play your sound files. The general rule is this, if you are using the WAV file type, you can either use Pocket Tunes, or check off "Play wav Sync mode".

    If you are going to use the PDB (LightWav) sound files, installed to RAM, you will need to go into the LightWav preferences and uncheck both "Always Use PocketTunes" and "Play wav Sync Mode". These two options will not work with the LightWav specific files.
