Drive Policies Management Toolkit (or short: DPOLMGMT) is a Windows drive policies tool. It allows to query, modify, write or undefine each of the policies it supports, individually. The program can:
Each of these policies, except for the last one, can either be applied for the current user or for all users of a computer. DPOLMGMT allows to output policies to a .REG file, what may be useful for the purpose of generating of a set of settings that could later be applied for restricted user accounts.
Windows offers drive letter policies letting to:
Their registry names are NoDrives, NoViewOnDrive and NoDriveAutoRun, respectively.
There may be different registry combinations, resulting in different interpretations.
It is assumed that an HKLM entry overrides any present entry in HKCU. Thus, deleting a registry value is not equal to setting it to zero.
DPOLMGMT is capable of querying those settings properly.
Another policy is NoDriveTypeAutoRun, value of which decides whether Windows will disable AutoRun for a particular drive type.
This policy is also supported by DPOLMGMT appropriately.
Yet, there is a policy that is specific to USB devices - WriteProtect policy, which can also be controlled by the program. This policy has a global scope, meaning that it always affects all users of a computer in which it is applied.
DPOLMGMT keeps in memory all the selections made by user during the workflow of the program. These selections are lost as its process terminates; the program does not preserve user selections in registry, neither on a hard drive. The only values in the registry that are read and written by the program are the policies - no registry rubbish is left after the program.
The windows share all the same information. One can open .reg file creation dialog, select all the options, open another window to specify settings that had been forgotten to have been done, and the program will catch up all the changes being made in the interim.
The program allows for having many of its sub-windows open during its workflow. Main window of the program can not be closed until all its sub-windows are closed. If lost in windows, one can just click appropriate button in the main window for the proper one to be brought to top.
DPOLMGMT supports changing selections on the fly. It means that one can open .reg file creation window while having NoDriveTypeAutoRun and Drive Letter Policies dialog boxes open at the same time. Changes made in one window are immediately visible to the rest. Three additional buttons have been made available in the .reg file creation dialog for the end-user to be able to open or bring to top the windows responsible for particular policies.
Such file can later be used in an unattended installation or it can just be double-clicked to apply desired settings. The program generates .reg files with REGEDIT4 header, what means that they can even be used in systems prior to Windows 2000, such as Windows 95, NT4 or 98.
Button icons are known not to display in Windows prior to and including Windows XP. Apart from this, all the functionality remains the same.
Drive Policies Management Toolkit is a free software. It can be used for home use as well as for commercial purposes with no charge.
