1. Introduction

FLWaveRef is a small program for handheld computers running
the Palm operating system. It serves as a companion for the
FLPhysicsRef program, or as a stand-alone program. It is a
reference for the following physics "wave" information:
the electromagnetic spectrum, the visible light spectrum,
ionizing radiation levels, and sound levels.

2. System Requirements

The software occupies approximately 34 KB of disk space on
the host computer and 34 KB of memory on the handheld.

The software was created with Palm OS 3.5 SDK. Most of the
software testing was performed on Palm OS versions 3.5 and
4.1, with some additional testing on versions 3.0 and 5.0.

If your hardware supports 256 colors, the program's buttons
will appear in color.

3. Software Installation

The software is installed using the normal Palm method of
copying the WaveRef.prc file from the host to the
handheld computer, i.e. selecting the file with the Install
Tool then performing a HotSync. An icon labeled "WaveRef"
will appear in the handheld's Application screen and
the program should be ready for use.

If your hardware supports color, but the program's button
colors are unreadable, or the program crashes painting the
screen, please go to the Options/Preferences menu item
and disable button colors.

4. Software Use

User Interface

On the first startup the program will display the software
license agreement. Please read it and click the OK button
if you agree to the terms of the license.

After the license screen, the main "directory" screen appears.
This screen allows you to select one of four program areas:
Electromagnetic Spectrum, Visible Light Spectrum, Ionizing
Radiation Levels, and Sound Levels. Please tap the buttons,
not the icons.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum screen has a vertical column
of spectrum buttons, one for each frequency multiple of 10 Hz,
from radio frequencies to gamma ray frequencies. Tapping a
button will produce a pop-up window of additional information
about the particular frequency and wavelength. Tapping the "i"
in the upper right of the spectrum screen displays a few tips
on using the screen.

The Visible Light Spectrum screen has a vertical column
of spectrum buttons, one for each well-known color range, from
red to violet. Tapping a button will produce a pop-up window
of additional information about the particular frequency and
wavelength range. Tapping the "i" in the upper right of the
spectrum screen displays a few tips on using the screen.

The Ionizing Radation Levels screen has a vertical column
of dose buttons, one for each dose equivalent multiple of
10 mSv/yr, from the very low level of 0.00005 mSv/yr to the
dangerous level of 500 mSv/yr. Tapping a button will produce
a pop-up window of additional information about the particular
dose equivalent level. Tapping the "i" in the upper right of
the level screen displays some information about ionizing
radiation units.

The Sound Levels Spectrum screen has a scrolling list of dB
sound levels, from the low level of 20 dB to the damaging
level of 145 dB. Tapping the "i" in the upper right of the
levels screen displays a few tips on using the screen.

The Options menu is active for all screens. It contains
three items: Preferences, Software License, and About
FLWaveRef. If you tap the Preferences item you will have
the opportunity to control whether or not the program remembers
which page it was on, and to enable or disable button colors.
If you tap the License item the text of the software license
agreement is displayed. Finally, if you tap the About button
the program version and copyright information is displayed.
