Installation

We have published detailed installation instructions for:

If you consider yourself as a "pro" Linux user, then you can save time by following these instructions:

  1. Check if Oracle Java is installed. Type the following command in Command Prompt if you are using Windows or in Terminal if you are using Linux.
    java -version
If the output of the command does not indicate an Oracle/Sun Java installation (check for the word "HotSpot"), then install it now and only then proceed to the next step. You can download Java "JRE" from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html. If you are already using another JVM (such as OpenJDK) and do not want to overwrite it with the Sun JVM, then download the "tar.gz" installer from Oracle website and extract it to a folder such as "/opt/oracle-jre".
  2. Extract contents of the Free PDF Reader download zip file (freepdferader.zip) to a suitable location on your hard disk. Check that the following files have been extracted.

    1. FreePDFReader.jar
    2. readme.html
    3. license.html
    4. history.html
    5. pdfonejfont.dll
    6. libpdfonejfont.so
    7. libpdfonejfont_x64.so
    8. libpdfonejfont.jnilib
  3. In the Command Prompt or Terminal, launch the FreePDFReader.jar.
  • If a Free PDF Reader window loads fine, then you can create a Windows shortcut or a Linux Launcher on your Desktop, using the command that worked for you.
  • Known Issues

The following features are not supported:

Note: Free PDF Reader uses a FreeType Library for accurate rendering of fonts. Currently, Free PDF Reader uses FreeType binaries for Windows (32-bit & 64-bit DLLs), Linux (32-bit & 64-bit .so) and Mac (.jnilib). These binaries should be in the same directory as FreePDFReader.jar.
