Summary

HobDeeConTM is a numeric base converter for the Palm Computing® Platform which can convert a number in one base to several other bases simultaneously.  The current version supports bases ranging from 2 to 36 inclusive.  (This includes the binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal bases.)

Entering numbers

You can enter numbers for HobDeeConTM to convert in one of four ways.  First, tap one of the numbers in one of the bases where you would like to enter digits.  In the example below, we have tapped the rightmost area of the base 16 numeric representation.  The insertion point is blinking and ready for you to enter digits.  (In this example, we assume the number 10 (base 16) was already there.)

Then you can enter digits in one of four ways:

1. HobDeeConTM digit pad

HobDeeConTM includes a small numeric keypad which can be use for entering digits with values between 0 and 15.  The pad also has a backspace key which you can use to correct invalid input.

2.  Graffiti® input

Just make a Graffiti® stroke corresponding to the digit you want in the Graffiti® writing area.  (For bases 11 and above, you can make Graffiti® strokes in the area for writing letters as well.)

3.  Keyboard dialog

You can bring up the keyboard dialog already built into your handheld device, and use it to enter digits.

4. Clipboard

If you already have some numeric digits stored in the clipboard you can paste them onto the number you are editing.  Access the menu, and select the Paste command.

Once you have entered one or more digits in one of these ways, HobDeeConTM will immediately convert the number to its equivalent in the other bases displayed onscreen.  You can keep entering digits or switch to and edit the number in a different representation.  HobDeeConTM will warn you of any invalid characters you may enter (through the clipboard or keyboard dialog) as well as of overflow errors.

Changing numeric bases

You can change the numeric base for any of the rows at any time by using the pop-up list at the rightmost edge of the row.




You can turn off the display for any row by selecting the blank option (located above base 2) in the pop-up list for that row.

Changing other display options

HobDeeConTM has three fonts from which you can choose according to your needs.  Tap one of the three boxes at the top right corner to switch fonts.



HobDeeConTM has a double-line display mode for viewing number which do not fit in a single line.  You can select between the single and double line display mode by tapping one of the two buttons at the left of the font selection buttons.

Viewing error messages

HobDeeConTM has an error warning display located at the top between the title and the line selection buttons.  The display is activated and blinks when HobDeeConTM runs across a problem during conversion.  You can tap the error display to get a full description of the problem encountered.  (In the example below, HobDeeConTM was unable to convert the number in the base 16 row because it was too large for the program's current capabilities.)

Registration

HobDeeConTM is shareware, which means that you can try it out for a limited time period before deciding whether you want to pay a fee to keep on using this program.  By registering, you will no longer have to see a splash screen and wait before using the program.  You will also support and fund further development of HobDeeConTM and similarly useful programs.  We hope you have found HobDeeConTM useful and will help us to make it even better.

Frequently Asked Questions

 This documentation was prepared before HobDeeConTM was released, meaning we have yet to receive questions about it.  Eventually, we will add questions and answers which may be helpful to many users.  For now, we will try and answer a couple of  questions we anticipate (or not).

Q: What does the name "HobDeeCon" mean, if anything? (March 27, 2003)
A: While looking for a name for what would become HobDeeConTM we considered several possibilities.  One of the more promising possibilities was the acronym HOBDCon (for Hexadecimal-Octal-Binary-Decimal Converter).  The name "HobDeeCon" is based on this acronym.

Q: How do you pronounce "HobDeeCon"? (March 27, 2003)
A: HobDeeConTM has three syllables: "Hob", "Dee", and "Con".  You pronounce "Hob" as in "hobble" (though HobDeeConTM does anything but hobble), "Dee" as in "decency", and "Con" as in "con game" (though with HobDeeConTM, what you see is what you get, no tricks!)
