NetWatcher v2.9

FAQ
  Is there any maximum limitation for NetWatcher Client? What is the theory?

No. NetWatcher Server could monitor any numbers of NetWatcher Client, which is an obvious advantage. NetWatcher consists of Server and Client. Client is an embedded component at supervised computer, which accepts commands from Server and gives appropriate response to Server. Server manages and controls all Clients centrally. In order to avoid the dramatically increased network traffic with Client congregation, Server utilities a “roll” mechanism to monitor Clients orderly, but not simultaneously, thus any potential bottlenecks of network and system is removed. In the “System Setting” of Server, “work thread number” is the simultaneously monitored Client number in one poll, “supervision interval” is the interval of monitoring activities.

  How to modify Firewall setting when a Client can not run?

Please ensure the TCP port 8899 is not blocked in Firewall of the Client. NetWatcher Client will automatically open Windows Firewall TCP 8899. For other firewall software settings, please refer to appropriate manual.

  How to configure Anti-Virus software to solve the problem that NetWatcher Client is reported as malware wrongly?

Anti-virus industry is a complex field and full of vendor standards. One serious problem of this industry is the wrong report of virus/spyware/malware, which is called "False Positives". It generally means that the subject is classified as "true" (that is a virus/spyware/malware) and action is taken (quarantine, missile launch, what-ever) based on that classification - although in fact the subject was not "true" (it just looks like a virus/spyware/malware). Experts have warned of the growing trend to display fake security warnings in an attempt to sell anti-virus software.

Unfortunately, sometimes NetWatcher Client is wrongly reported as virus/spyware/malware, but that is just a fake report of anti-virus software. In order to use NetWatcher correctly, please ignore the warning message and enable the NetWatcher Client execution programs ( normally Windows\NWService.exe and Windows\NWHook.exe ) to “Safe list”/”Trusted list”/”White list” accordingly.

  How to check whether NetWatcher Client is running?

In a DOS Windows, run “telnet [Client’s IP] 8899”. If the result is “200 Welcome.”, that means NetWatcher Client is installed and run properly. Otherwise, there are something wrong, please check the Client installation and Firewall setting. In order to get Client’s IP, you can run “ipconfig /all” in a DOS Windows of Client.

  NetWatcher Monitor can not detect the new added Client. How to diagnose it?

Please follow the steps as below:

(1) Check whether the latest version of Client and Monitor are installed;
(2) Check whether Client is running at Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services->NetWatcher;
(3) Increase the value of Monitor->Tools -> System Setting -> Client timeout, see if effective;
(4) Check the supervision password at Monitor-> Tools -> Password Setting;
(5) Please contact with us if you still can not solve the problem.

  I can not disable or enable CD/DVD driver. How to solve it?

Please ensure there is no CD or DVD media in your driver.

  NetWatcher Client keeps a high CPU usage. How to avoid it?

Please increase the value of Monitor->Tools -> System Setting -> Supervision interval, thus reduce the frequency of supervision activities, which require CPU power.

  After NetWatcher Client is set with a supervision password, Monitor shows Client screen snapshot with "Wrong Password". How to solve it?

This is caused by mismatched password between Monitor and Clients. NetWatcher Monitor could set up a password for all NetWatcher Clients online, preventing from unauthorized access. The theory behind this is given as follows:

(1) Monitor could only set up a supervision password for online Clients. For offline Clients, it could not set up a password.
(2) Monitor set up a password in Clients and Clients will store this password locally. Only supervision request with same password could be accepted by Clients. Thus, Clients could deny unauthorized supervision.
(3) When a supervision operation happens, Client will compare its local password with the one sent from Monitor. If the passwords are matched, supervision will continue. Otherwise, Clients will deny any supervision request.
(4) Changing Clients password is implemented only after Clients’ storing password is matched with Monitor's old password. Then a new password could be set at Clients.

Mismatched password between Monitor and Clients often causes screen snapshot with "Wrong Password".

For this phenomenon, two solutions are suggested as follows:
(1) After all Clients get online; you can set a blank password for all Clients with your old password. Then when all Clients are supervised normally, you can set a new password for all with a blank old password.
(2) Contact with us, we could supply with a clean password tool, which could clean up the passwords of both Monitor and Client in an easy way.

  Why "Email Report" can not send supervision Email?

We found that some public Email services add powerful anti-spam functions, which deny batches of Email as spam and cause "Email Report" working abnormally. Followed is the solution we present:

Please use our report@netguarder.com to send Email, which could send supervision Email without limitation and could not receive Email. At Monitor->Control Panel->Email Report, use the setting as follows:

---------------------------------
SMTP: mail.netguarder.com
From: report@netguarder.com
To: youremail@anydomain
UserID: report@netguarder.com
Password: 123456
---------------------------------

  What kind of data is collect from keystroke supervision?

Keystroke supervision is collect keystroke input history of the current remote user in supervised computer. The keystroke includes all original characters and IME translated characters. The data is organized in date time, Windows titles and content. One exception is that the log data does not collect the keystroke not dropping in Microsoft Message Queue.

  Why I can install software after I disable installing software from NetWatcher Monitor?

NetWatcher Server can disable installing any software in use of Microsoft MSI 2.0 service, which is an interface of Microsoft OS installation service to many install wizard package. NetWatcher can catch function calling from software installation and block software installation. NetWatcher can not block the software package without calling MSI 2.0 service.

  We need a long period license for evaluation. Could you generate license based on days other than formal 3 days?

Yes. From version 2.8, NetWatcher could support any trial days’ evaluation, which is controlled by different license codes.

  In Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), NetWatcher Log Server may receive an error message "Illegal System DLL Relocation". How to solve this?

This is a Microsoft bug; please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935448/  for more information. After you download and install KB935448 service patch from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=74ad4188-3131-429c-8fcb-f7b3b0fd3d86  , the problem will be solved.
