HTML tutor- Lesson 1

HTML is all about tags. Start up notepad with a couple of html tags.

<html>
</html>

Tags in HTML usually come in pairs. The above are known as the html tags. The first html tag (<html>) tells your browser that an HTML document has begun. The second html tag (</html>) tells the document that an html docuemnt has ended. You must have these in your html file!

Now within the html tags, add a couple of head tags.

<html>	
<head>
</head>	
</html>

Within the head tags add the title tags. Within the title tags goes the title of the page. The title of the page is what you see at the topmost position of you browser.

<html>
<head> 
<title>  My first webpage!  </title> 
</head>
</html>

The title tags is all you need in your head tags for now. Next comes the most important part of your webpage.

After the head tags, body tags are inserted. The following is the basic layout of any webpage (good webpage).

<html>
<head>
<title> My first webpage! </title>
</head> 
<body>
</body> 
</html>

Within the body tags goes the main content of your website. So type the following in your body tags:

<html>
<head>
<title> My first webpage! </title>
</head>
<body>
Hello Dear World!
</body>
</html>

By now you've probably noticed that the end tags have an extra / at the beginning. For example, <body> + / gives you </body> which is the "end tag".

Finally save the file as mypage.html. Also sort of memorize the above format. Just get used to it. Also notice that I used lower-case letters to save the file. Do the same and don't ask me why. And also don't forget to add the .html extension.

Now you might not believe this but you've actually just finished your first web page!

Now since you haven't uploaded this page on the internet (a lesson for another day), your website doesn't begin with http://, https:// or www. etc. You get the point. You only upload your website once you're done making the website.

So how do you view your progress. There's many ways. The first thing you can do is open a web browser, click file, open , browse. Then simply browse to mypage.html.

OR, you can manually type the location of mypage.html in the location bar of the browser. For example, if I saved mypage.html in the C drive in a folder called mywebsites I would type the following in the location bar: C:/mywebsites/mypage.html. Memorize this format.

OR you can go to the start menu (for windows this is right click on start and click explore), go to the directory where you saved mypage.html and click on the internet explorer icon or firefox icon etc. which says mypage.html. Pretty straightforward, I hope.
