If you've never done programming before (and HTML is not programming), you're in for a lot of fun. JavaScript is the programming language of the internet. You can't call yourself a web designer if you don't know JavaScript- it's as simple as that.

JavaScript can be used to react to events, validate form data, create cookies, detect a visitor's browser and a lot more! JavaScript is capable of a lot.

A few notes before I get on to the serious stuff:

1.) JavaScript and Java are not the same. Java is totally different from JavaScript and is also of a more complex nature

2.) If you're serious about programming, JavaScript is an excellent place to begin. I've noticed that learning C and C++ is much easier after learning JavaScript

3.) You must have a firm grip on HTML before learning JavaScript. If you don't, go to the HTML tutor right now

4.) You must be patient and take your time with JavaScript. JavaScript can get really frustrating if you try to rush through things. Take your time and when you get stuck, just don't give up.

5.) Don't skip over any material in this tutorial. If you're skipping all the examples and exercises, you're learning nothing. You must physically practice JavaScript.

Now once again I recommend that you continue using notepad but you can use something else as long as it's a text editor. Also open up IE or Firefox or whatever browser you like and ensure that JavaScript is enabled. If you don't know how to check whether JavaScript is enabled go here.
