In the HTML tutor we had one lesson devoted to meta tags but meta tags deserve more than one lesson. They should not be taken lightly.

Meta tags, if used effectively, can help you get more traffic to your website. However, if meta tags are misused they can also reduce traffic to your website!

Before we begin you must keep in mind that meta tags just don't do what they they used to do. Before google, meta tags were one of THE MAIN resource used by search engines to rank a website. However, meta tags were abused by more and more people and Google was discovered.

There are many other search engines that still depend upon meta tags to rank a website. Your meta tags must "blend in" with your website or else it will look like you don't know what you're doing or you tried to misuse meta tags. This might result in your website being penalized by search engines like Google and once your website is penalized, it's dead. I repeat, once your website is penalized it's literally dead. In short, you must know how to use meta tags or not use them at all.
