CONFIGURING YOUR PC TO RUN POPNOTE

Before proceeding, you need to be aware that for
PopNote to signal properly (that is receive back an
echo of what you send as well as receive replies from
the remotes), PopNote requires that two UDP ports
(54538 and 54539) be allowed to pass traffic in either
direction through your modem, router and firewall, or
whatever combination of those you have. Without this
PopNote will not work properly. Opening these two ports
will in no way compromize the security of your
computer.

Unblocking restrictions to these two ports (or any
ports used by other IM or game clients) can be a highly
frustrating and daunting task for some users. However,
IF you have a genuine use for a private channel peer to
peer IM client like PopNote, the end result will be
reward enough for the effort you expend. More info
can be found at http://arc.tzo.com/popnotef/

Things to be aware of:
------------------------------------------------------

Many Modems (DSL and Wireless) have built in rudimentary
firewalls that block most all incoming ports. These
firewalls can be turned off (by enabling DMZ or Port
Followthrough) by accessing the Modems setup menu vi your
Browser. Check your Modem's manual for the access IP
address. Typically its 192.168.1.254

Windows 7 or XP SP2 operating systems come with a basic
firewall that blocks all incoming ports by default. This
is adaquate, just remember to stop Blocking when the
Security window pops up the first time you run PopNote.

Most all Routers can be set to either Port Forward
specific ports on any Node or DMZ (pass everything) to
any node. Again, you access its setup menu vi your
Browser. Check the Router manual for the access IP
address. Typically the IP is 192.168.1.1
