« RegStart - Online Manual »
RegStart is a powerful "Registry Start-Up Cleaner" which will help you remove or backup any element present in your "Registry" and/or "Start Menu" start-up locations. Due to its powerful registry scanner RegStart has the ability to look in all startup locations and it will show you every start-up entry present in your system registry. If you are logged in as an administrator RegStart will give you the possibility to clean the start-up locations for all users present on your station. Please note that RegStart also has the ability to scan the "Start Menu" start-up locations and it will show you every file present in those locations. RegStart has a few extras too, that is, it will give you the possibility to edit special system files that are normally read on system start-up.

Usage

  • The List - This is the main display area which will contain valuable start-up information. This list was/is divided in four(4) columns thus each list item has four(4) sections in which specific information is displayed:
    • Type - Used to specify the item type. The list can & will contain two item types:
      • Registry - This item type is used to represent a "Registry" start-up entry;
      • Start-Up - This item type is used to represent a "Start Menu" start-up file.
    • ID <=> Name - For a "Registry" item this represents a registry value name and for a "Start-Up" item this represents a start-up filename;
    • Action <=> Property - For a "Registry" item this represents an action which will be executed on system startup and for a "Start-Up" item this represents a property/description for a start-up file;
    • Location - For a "Registry" item this represents a registry location and for a "Start-Up" item this represents a start-up location, a full path.
    Please note that the list can and probably will contain multiple/clone "Registry" entries which represent the same user and that's because RegStart wants to point out how the system sees that particular user. Generally "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" which represents you, the current user, is a shortcut for a user presented in/under "HKEY_USERS" therefore if you delete something found under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" its corresponding double will disappear from the list. You can remove an item from this list by applying a double-click with the left mouse button on one of the items. Please note that if you apply a double-click with the right mouse button RegStart will prompt you to make a backup the selected item;
  • Remove(F8) - This button is used to remove one of the list items, that is, a "Registry" item will be deleted from the registry and a "Start-Up" item/file will be deleted from it's location. Please note that everytime you remove an item the list will be refreshed;
  • Backup(F9) - This button is used to make a backup for the selected item. If you select a "Registry" item you will be prompted to select a location for a registry file in which to save the registry entry. Registry files are special documents which generally have an REG(*.reg) extension and they are used to hold registry information. If you ever want to recover/apply/restore the saved entry you must apply a double click on the registry file. In case you select a "Start-Up" item/file you will be prompted to select a location in which to copy(backup copy) the selected item;
  • Extras - The "Extras" menu contains a collection of sub-menu-items which are used to represent important system files that are generally read on system start-up. Each and every one of these sub-menu-items will invoke a special editor named MicroEdit and thus you'll have the possibility to change the selected file. MicroEdit is a light and easy to use line by line editor and was specially designed for editing text based system start-up files. MicroEdit has the following interface features:
    • The List - This is the main display area which will contain the file's content. You can remove an item from this list by applying a double-click with the left mouse button on one of the items. Please note that everytime you select an item its content will be shown in the text field;
    • Add New - This button is used to add data from the text field in the list;
    • Swap - This button is used to swap the selected item's content with the data found in the text field. Please note that you must first select an item from the list, type your data in the text field and then click this button;
    • Move Up - This button is used to move one of the list items up;
    • Move Down - This button is used to move one of the list items down;
    • Remove - This button is used to remove one of the list items;
    • Save - This button is used to save your modifications. BE CAREFUL!!!
    • Save As - This button is used to save your modifications in a new location. This is also a good way to make a backup before you start editing anything;
    • Exit - This button is used to exit the editor.
  • Refresh(F5) - Click this button to update the list, that is, upon refresh, the "Registry" and "Start Menu" start-up locations will be (re)checked;
  • Exit(Ctrl+Q or Escape) - Exit the application;
  • Manual(F1) - Open & read the manual.

Final notes

  • RegStart was and is designed to help users detect viruses, spyware, spamware and other malicious software that usually start on system start-up;
  • Please use RegStart everytime you install software on your system;
  • IF YOU EVER SEE MESSAGES THAT ASK YOU TO REBOOT YOUR MACHINE run RegStart. Some viruses tend to simulate Windows messages and on reboot they try to disable(erase) security software, like firewalls, before they even have a chance to start;
  • Don't use MicroEdit! This editor was and is designed for advanced users and for system administrators who know how to edit a system file. If you don't know what a file is and what it does don't touch it!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
