RoamEarth does not require installation. Simply start the MapRoamer browser by double-clicking RvlEarth.exe.
You will need MS Windows 98/NT/2000/Me/XP/Vista and a CD-ROM drive.
Follow the steps below for a quick tour of some browser features.
Run RoamEarth
1. Double-click "RvlEarth.exe" to start the MapRoamer browser.
2. Click the "Open ..." button, a dialog box appears.
3. Select "Remote Sensing" from the "Main category list", select "Elevation - True color" from the "Sub category list" and click OK, a window opens to display image layer 0 (the Earth Image Index).
Zoom-In (Changing levels)
4. Position your cursor over the Earth Image Index and click a location on the image; or click the Find button to select a city name.
5. Select "View Detail" if you used the Earth Image Index from step 4. The window will refresh to display image layer 1 (a 4km resolution image) centered at your selected location or city. At the bottom level (layer 1), the longitude and latitude coordinates of your cursor's location will appear at the top of the window.
Examine Data by Pixel
6. Continuing at this image level (layer 1), click the Image Pixel button.
7. Move your cursor to any point of interest on the image, the "Image Pixel" dashboard appearing at the lower right corner of the image window displays the elevation data value for the current pixel.
Apply Visual Data Filters
8. Continuing at this image level (layer 1), choose a pixel of moderate elevation with respect to its surroundings.
9. Right-click the target pixel, a pop-up menu appears.
10. Select "Image Filter On", an "Image Filter" dialog box appears.
11. Choose "Interpreted Elevation (m)" from the "Analysis by" section, "Above" from "Select target range", "No filter" from "Luminosity filter", and "Highlight target area" from "Filter display style", then click OK, all pixels of elevations greater than your target will be highlighted to an opaque color.
12. Right-click the image again and select "Image Filter Off".
View 3D Elevation Plots
13. Continuing at this image level (layer 1), locate and right-click on a region of interest for 3D visualization, a pop-up menu appears.
14. Select "Image 3D Study" and adjust 3D plot display speed/quality (i.e. Quick browse at lower quality vs. High quality at slower performance, or a user defined setting), a new window appears to display an interactive 3D plot of the target region.
15. Position your cursor over the 3D image, drag with the left mouse button to alter viewing angle.
16. Use your mouse scroll wheel to increase/decrease the size of your 3D plot.
17. Reduce or increase vertical magnification if necessary via the horizontal scroll bar.
18. Position your cursor over the source image, drag with the right mouse button to refresh the 3D plot with data from a new location.
19. Right-click over the 3D image and choose "Select 3D Options" , the "Select 3D options" dialog box appears.
20. Change 3D display setup to meet your requirement. For example, select 3 in the "Surface color smoothing coefficient" drop down box to improve visualization smoothness.
Export Elevation
Data
21. Right-click over the 3D image and choose "Data Export", the "Export Elevation Data Options" dialog box appears.
22. Select "Tab delimited" and keep "Include header information" checked, and click OK.
23. Click OK again in the Message box.
24. Open a new Excel file and select "Paste" from the "Edit" menu to obtain elevation data for your current 3D
plot.
