Introduction

BDicty is a generic dictionary program for Palm Pilot and other PalmOS^® compatible devices. The dictionary has two main components: the BDicty program itself and one or more databases with  language information, called lexicons. It is very similar to a document reader software like Word or Excel - one program and many possible documents. BDicty allows unlimited number of lexicons to be installed at the same time, provided the device has enough memory.

The program is fairly simple and intuitive to use. You do not need any special training in order to start using it (yes, you can stop reading now). Yet, it is useful to know a bit more about it to take maximum advantage out of it and avoid confusion.

BDicty (the program) comes in two versions: Public and Commercial.

The Public version is free and available for download at our website and other places around. It has the basic dictionary program functionality and you can use it to evaluate all sample lexicons (language files) out there. It can also be used to run the full versions of the lexicons and many do that. The advantage of the Public BDicty is that it is free and provides the most important functionality for a dictionary program; the disadvantage is that it lacks some additional functionality (e.g. adding your own entries) and it is not supported.

The Commercial (full) version of BDicty gives you several advantages over the Public one, among which the ability to add your own words and enclosed additional phrasebooks for different languages, technical support, free updates and others. For the full list and the latest version (the updates are free!) please check on our website. You can obtain BDicty Commercial for $10.

Note that you are not required to purchase the Commercial BDicty version for most of the language lexicons we sell.

Note also, that the Commercial BDicty is a standalone product! Purchasing one lexicon or bundle does not automatically entitles you to the full BDicty version unless otherwise noted (most of the bundles actually do).

There are some free lexicons and can be downloaded and used from various places, including our website. 

Installation

BDicty Dictionary has 2 main components: a dictionary program (BDicty.PRC) and data (one or more language files called lexicons), e.g. En2Fre.PDB).
You can not use any lexicon without a program and a program does not make any good without at least one lexicon.

Most lexicons have self, explanatory names, like En2Ger.PDB, English.PDB or RussPhr.PDB. The common thing about all of them is the suffix of the file name, which has to be ".PDB" (from Palm DataBase). If you have a file that could not get recognized, make sure it has the proper suffix and rename it if necessary. This applies not only to BDicty files, but to the whole family of PalmOS files.

If you have downloaded BDicty.zip (or any evaluation lexicon file, e.g. BDicty_En2Fre.zip) file you have to:

1. Extract it using WinZip (on Windows) or StuffIt (on MacOS) and find the files BDicty.prc and lexicon_file.pdb (e.g. En2Fre.pdb)
2. Hotsync the two files into your device

If you have downloaded an EXE file (e.g. BDicty.exe), just start it and follow the instructions.

Installing upgrades:
Simply install the new BDicty.prc version into your device, unless otherwise noted on the download page or in a README file in the package downloaded. Deleting previous version should not be necessary. Yet, sometimes it happens that after installing the new file you still get the old one running instead. In that case, please delete BDicty from your device and install all files again.

Purchasing

Please note again, that the the Commercial BDicty program is a separate product from the language add-ons. Check the other sections for more on that.

By purchasing the Commercial BDicty version you will get more features (e.g. ability to add your own entries), technical support, free updates, access to other lexicons like phrasebooks and others.

The price is $10, but can be changed during promotions or other events. For discounts on group licenses refer to the distributor of your choice from the list below. Enterprise licenses and customized versions are also available upon request.

BDicty Commercial can be purchased online with a credit card or over the phone from some of our distributors. If some of the places listed below is busy or out of date, please use another one (this may also apply for our own website!).

Note: The dictionary lexicons are separate products and are distributed separately! Thet could have different prices or even be free.

• Check the Online Support Page: this is a great resource to find the best solution of your problem; this is also the place where you will get most accurate information on our current availability status (e.g. if we have technical troubles etc.) and often you can find help from other customers like you on our online forum.

In all cases, please be advised that we often depend on other institutions and might not be able to provide you with instant solution or even instant callback. While most of the time we succeed to resolve all problems or at least reply back the same day, it may happen that you won't hear from us. Please send another email if you don't hear from us in 24 hours.

If you have problems receiving your ordered copy of a BEIKS product, please refer to the distributor you have used to order it! If, for some reason, you want to return the product, you again have to refer to the distributor that you purchased it from.

You are allowed to use the Public version of the Software for free, but you need author's permission to distribute it. Unregistered use of the Commercial version is a violation of the U.S. and international copyright laws. The Software shall not be modified, reverse engineered, disassembled or used for any derivative works based on the software for any purpose.

You are allowed to install and use the Commercial versions of any BEIKS software product only on your PDA. You are allowed to make backup copies and otherwise duplicate such software for your personal usage only. 

You may not lend, share or rent BEIKS software without written agreement. Redistribution without agreement is also prohibited.

The Public and evaluation versions of the product are supplied as is.
