To the Moon by Anthony Piraino

“I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” President Kennedy spoke those words in 1961, launching an eight year race to the Moon. The United States’ effort consisted of three phases leading to the achievement of that goal:

The Mercury Program: The goals of this project were to put a manned spacecraft into orbit around the Earth, study how we could function in space, and to return the man and spacecraft safely to Earth.

The Gemini Program: Gemini sought to extend man’s time in space, keeping an astronaut and spacecraft in orbit around Earth for up to two weeks. Rendezvous and docking maneuvers were also developed and practiced. The Gemini spacecraft was large enough to accommodate two astronauts during missions.

The Apollo Program: Apollo’s goals included landing on and exploring the Moon. A three part spacecraft was used to accomplish this—the Command Service Module (CSM) stayed in orbit around the Moon while the Lunar Module (LEM or LM) flew down to the surface, and then back into Lunar orbit to re-dock with the CSM. Upon returning to the Earth, the Command Module re-entered the atmosphere, carrying the astronauts home.

Hope you enjoy the icons. There’s also an added bonus: Mando Gomez has been kind enough to create a desktop to go with this icon set, and it’s included in this download. Be sure to check out his website, mandolux, for even more great desktops.
